Hallendale is a city located in Broward County Florida. The population, as of 2012, was pinned at 38,400 residents.
Students are educated through the Broward County Public School system. There are elementary and middle schools in the city, educating grades K- 8 and the high school, covering grades 9 through 12 is located in Hallendale. There are several private schools in the area offering an alternative to public school education. The city is named after a worker for the Florida East Coast Railroad, by the name of Luther Halland. He was tasked with the founding of a settlement south of Dania. Halland built a trading post and became the first postmaster for the small community. Growth was slow, but steady and by 1900 12 families inhabited the area. In 1904, the first school was built followed by a church two years later. The town became a farming community and the beach area was utilized for recreational purposes only.
The community was incorporated in 1927 and boasted 1,500 residents. The opening of a Hallendale based hotel in 1958 brought a great deal of attention to the area due to its night club. A building boom soon followed and the city became a favorite destination for seasonal and year round residents.
